Louis H. Gienau

Louis H. “Louie” Gienau, 94, of Tripoli, died Tuesday, April 28, 2015, at Rosewood Estates in Waterloo.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 2, 2015, at Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli with Rev. Scott Duffus and Rev. Lawrence Stumme officiating.  Interment will follow in Grace Lutheran Cemetery, rural Tripoli. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Friday, May 1st  at Rettig Funeral Home in Tripoli and for one hour preceding services at the church on Saturday. Memorials may be made in his name to Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli. 

Louis Henry, son of Gustav and Clara Schmitt Gienau, was born September 4, 1920, near Denver, Iowa. He was baptized October 10, 1924, and confirmed April 5, 1936, in Denver. He received his education in the Denver Public Schools. On March 25, 1945, Louie was united in marriage with Doris Godden at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. He farmed near Tripoli, and also worked for many years at John Deere & Co. before retiring in 1977. Following Doris’ death in 1994, he continued to spend winters in Florida as they had done for many years. Louie enjoyed playing cards and pool, fishing, and always had a way with animals.

He is survived by five sons, Bruce (Linda) and Richard, all of Waterloo, Robert (Janice) of Denver, Raymond (Carla) of Rowley, and Glen of Tripoli; twenty-one grandchildren; and twenty-nine great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife, Louie was preceded in death by three sons, David, Lawrence, and Gary; a granddaughter, Amanda; a grandson, Brian, who was killed in action while serving with the U.S. Army in Iraq; two sisters, Esther and Verena; and two brothers, Alfred and Charlie.
